Today’s 8th Annual STEM Summit provided the setting for Lieutenant Gov. Timothy Murray’s news of a new initiative to make students aware of opportunities in STEM (science, technology, engineering and math). It also served as the backdrop for news of a $40,000 seed funding for a regional STEM network in Boston.
The ‘WOW’ initiative aims to raise awareness about STEM opportunities for students. As part of the campaign, Massachusetts schools will receive a series of videos highlighting the opportunities and some of the people applying their STEM skills, such as Boston Red Sox statistician Bill James, Harmonix Music Systems video game designer Jim Toepel and Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute’s ocean researcher Amy Kukulya.
The new regional STEM Network, focused on the city of Boston and fueled by the $40,000 in seed funding from the STEM Advisory Council, is expected to bring together academic, private and non-profit sectors, and connect the city’s network with six regional Pre-K-16 STEM networks throughout Massachusetts.
